Thinking of shipping your vehicle? Seems a simple task, right? Load the vehicle on a truck, and a few days later pick it up from your new destination. Simple as it may sound, the poor car has to go through a lot of drills, before and during its transit from one city to another. And if you do not take care of it and prepare it for the move, your prized possession may suffer some irreparable damage, which will break your heart and also pinch your pocket. So, if your want your vehicle to have a smooth and hassle-free journey, prepare it to face the roads. Just as we require planning for our relocation, a car also needs adequate planning and preparation before shipment.

Simply following these tips will ensure a fool-proof preparation for your vehicle:

Before you plan to relocate your vehicle, keep in mind that all vehicles do not cost the same to move. Larger, heavier vehicles like SUVs cost more than moving an ordinary car. Size and weight do matter in relocation.

Before the moving day, wash your car thoroughly. A servicing is also recommended prior to moving. A wash-up will help you see any damage, dent etc on the surface of the car’s exterior.

After you have cleaned the exteriors, it is time to clear up the interiors as well. Make sure that your car does not carry anything inside – as it can severely damage the car while in transit. Also, car shipping companies are barred by law to carry any domestic item inside the vehicle. This is a serious offence and the company can be heavily fined for this. So clear up the interior of your car so that nothing useless remains inside it.

Deactivate any alarm system which your car may be fitted with. In case the alarm goes off during transit, the shipping company will find it difficult to shut it off.

Fuel is heavy. So make sure your car is not filled up. the optimum level is less than half the tank capacity.

Car accessories like fog lights, etc should be secured or better still removed prior to shipping. You could fold back the mirrors and retract the antennae, to prevent damage during transit. In other words, make sure that all gadgets which protrude out of the car should be folded and put back to their positions, so that nothing gets broken or dislodged during transit.

If you are shipping a convertible, you have to ensure that the top is up and secured properly. In case of any open seams, seal them properly to prevent entry of moisture which will damage the interiors. In case, the top of the convertible can not be secured, choose a ‘closed container’ for shipping the vehicle
